Healthcare Breaches Affect More than 10.8 M
Officials from the Department of Health and Human Services’ Office for Civil Rights have revised their list of healthcare information breaches over the past month to include 16 additional incidents, according to a GovInfoSecurity.com report.
The list now totals 265 cases that have affected over 10.8 million individuals since September 2009. The list, available via HHS.gov’s OCR site, can be viewed here in CSV and XML format.
The directory's new additions account for high profile breaches from March. Those include Health Net’s incident that affected 1.9 million customers when portable hard drives were lost. Another large breach came from Eisenhower Medical Center, where a computer was stolen from the center's Rancho Mirage, Calif. complex. That incident affected over 514,000 people.
The list has existed in some form since Feb. 22, 2010, when the HITECH Act breach notification rule was enacted. The rule, specifically section 13402(e)(4), requires health care groups to report breaches affecting more than 500 people within 60 days for posting to the HHS’ site.
