Markey: GRID Act Passage Long Overdue

Representative Ed Markey (D-MA) is urging the Chairman of the House Committee on Energy and Commerce, Fred Upton (R-MI), to take immediate action toward passing the Grid Reliability and Infrastructure Defense (GRID) Act, which Markey calls a bipartisan bill aimed at hardening the nation’s electrical grid and critical infrastructure against cyberattacks.

The European Union has set a series of ambitious goals for itself: by 2020, the 27 member states expect to collectively use 20 percent renewable energy, reduce CO2 emissions by 20 percent, and increase energy efficiency by 20 percent. In order to accomplish these goals, Europe will need to perform a major overhaul to its power grid, which will play an integral role in the development of the Union’s proposed energy economy.

The supposedly new attacks on the electrical grid and other portions of the country’s critical infrastructure that came to light this week are in fact not new at all and have been ongoing for several years. Attackers have been making serious inroads into U.S. government, utility and military networks for most of this decade and the problem is continuing to worsen, security experts say.
