Apple will fix an iPad 2 security flaw with the upcoming 5.0.1 build of its iOS operating system, it’s been reported. The fix should solve a problem publicized last month with the device’s locking feature that could’ve let someone access the iPad by bypassing its Smart Cover.
According to 9to5Mac.com, who first reported about the vulnerability in October, Apple’s fix prevents the iPad 2 from going to sleep when the user closes the Smart Cover while on the power off menu.
The new update, expected out in a few weeks, is currently available through developer channels. The company seeded the second version of the Beta build to developers via the iOS Dev Center on Friday.
Apple pushed the first beta version of iOS 5.0.1 on Wednesday of last week, fixing “bugs with documents in the Cloud” and a handful of bugs that were limiting the iPhone 4S’ battery life.
While beta releases of operating systems are expected to be sporadic, it remains to be seen if the official release of 5.0.1 will adhere to any sort of release cycle. It’s been well-documented that Apple’s patching timeline is as unpredictable as they come and that some semblance of a regular patching schedule might benefit the company.
