Researchers Develop Privacy-Protecting Android App

The continuing shift to mobile computing and the proliferation of smartphones has raised a slew of privacy and security concerns around the way that mobile devices and applications handle users’ data and personal information. A group of researchers from North Carolina State University has developed a method for addressing the problem on Android devices by giving users granular control of how apps can behave on their devices.

DeLongThere has been a lot of online venting and hand-wringing in the week since customers of email services provider Epsilon began informing millions of individuals in North America and Europe that their name and e-mail address had  been stolen in a massive data breach. In the week since the breach, there have been emphatic warnings about the potential for phishing attacks against the customers of Epsilon clients like Citi, Mariott, MoneyGram and Dell.  But does the theft of names and e-mail addresses constitute a major breach of personal privacy that consumers should be concerned about? I believe it does.

UPDATED: The number of companies that was affected by the attack on online marketing firm Epsilon Data Management has continued to grow, virtually by the hour. Many retailers, banks and other firms sent out notification letters to their customers on Monday, and to help you keep track of who’s affected, we’ve compiled a list of known companies victimized by the Epsilon attack.

The compromise of a system at online marketing company Epsilon Data Management that came to light last week and involves the email addresses and names of customers at companies such as Citibank, Kroger and Disney expanded over the weekend to include a slew of other companies. The attack does not appear to have compromised any customer financial data or other sensitive information.

A Moldovan man alleged to be the mastermind behind an international fraud ring that targeted both private and corporate bank accounts has been arrested in Limerick, Ireland, in a joint operation by Gardai and customs officials.
