Apple finally pushed out a patch yesterday for users of its older operating system, 10.5 Leopard, protecting them from the much-discussed Flashback Trojan.

While Apple issued patches last month for its Lion and Snow Leopard products, yesterday’s Flashback Removal Security Update identifies and removes common variants of the malware on the five-year old Leopard OS.

In addition to removing Flashback, the update also disables the Java plug-in for Safari.

Another update for Leopard, 2012-003 – also released yesterday, disables some versions of Adobe Flash Player that haven’t been patched yet and points users to Adobe’s website for updates.

Apple pushed out a similar update for Lion and Safari late last week that also blocked outdated versions of Adobe’s Flash Player as well as patching four security vulnerabilities.

The Flashback Trojan gained notoriety this year after it exploited a Java flaw and went on to infect upwards to 500,000 Mac-users, according to researchers at Dr. Web.
