Report: China Suffered 500K Cyber Attacks Last Year
The Chinese government claims they’ve seen nearly 500,000 cyber attacks designed to hit their computers over the past year, with the U.S. and India among the countries believed to be responsible.
A report issued Tuesday by the nation’s chief computer security monitoring network, the National Computer Network Emergency Response Coordination Center of China, found most attacks involved the use of Trojan Horse programs. The report claims 14.7 percent of the attacks originating in the United States while 8 percent are attributed to India.
The news arrives just days after McAfee’s claim that a singular country was responsible for attacking more than 70 international companies over the last 5 years. While McAfee’s report failed to name an instigator, many news outlets have openly implied China is the unnamed country even though one of nation’s main newspapers, the People’s Daily, deemed it “irresponsible” to make that connection.
China has the globe’s largest population of Internet users, 485 million, according to statistics released by the China Internet Network Information Center last month.
