How to configure Internet Explorer for secure surfing

How to Configure Internet Explorer to Stay Secure Online

With assistance from the United States Computer Emergency Response Team (US-CERT), this slideshow will walk you through the steps to configure Microsoft's Internet Explorer to limit the damage from hacker attacks.  Keep in mind that, in some cases, these recommended settings may interfere with normal usage of some applications.

Note that menu options may vary between versions of IE, so you should adapt the steps below as appropriate.

Locking Down Internet Explorer - Some Observations

Thank you for sharing this easy-to-follow tutorial about how to lock down IE with the aim of surfing (more) securely. Although I do not use IE for browsing, due to the fact IE is so embedded into Microsoft's operating system, I am still using IE. Many applications use components of IE to run, such as Outllook and FeedDemon. Thus, one important point that seems to have been overlooked in your tutorial is how to lock down the Intranet (LAN) security zone while still allowing these said applications to function. Can it be done? For example, I use a port forwarding application that requires the Intranet zone to be set at medium-low in order to work.

Secondly, I also do not see the merit in disabling browser addons when surfing. When then do you envision using such installed browser addons/extensions? I am assuming that such addons are those chosen by the user because of the enhanced functionality (not BHOs or toolbars unknowingly slipped in with a freeware installer) they provide (and have a demonstrated trusted, track record). As mentioned, I do not use IE but I reason the reference to using addons could be extrapolated to any browser, such as Chome or Firefox.

Thanks again for sharing this tutorial and the input from US Cert.

Do Firefox or other browsers need to do this?

Subject says it all.

Do Firefox or other browsers need to do this? Thanx from the dumb side.

User friendly terminology...!!!

If all these browser companies and search tool creators want the general public to use thier products ,Why don't they explain in plain english what abbreviations mean what, and really provide a user friendly experience..???

It seems that the less we as users know ,the more suseptible we are to intrusions, hackers, and the damages we do; not knowing how to deal with it ,,,which in turn only makes more bussiness for repair techs and those who might capitolize on the fact that most people have no exstensive education in computors...That is Abusive to the consumer...

I really appreciated this tutorial from Kaspersky Labs And I think it's great that there is a company that thinks outside the box enough to practice the best policy ,in business, the customer's satisfaction should always be paramount .....!!!!

thanks

Nice guide.  I will be sending some people this way.

San Antonio Computer Repair

Too general

I thought this would be a good slide show, but it is too general to be of much use.  I could have saved half the slides by saying, "Turn your settings to "High" security, and add sites to the "Trusted" group if they don't work.  The problem is that many sites are not trustworthy, but still need to function.  Even Google gets hacked or runs maliscious banners on occasion.

I think more discussion about the implications of fine-tuned settings, and recommendations about them would help more.  Unfortunately IE only fine tunes what is allowed for 4 categories, and one of those is Intranet, while the other is Restricted Sites.  So you have Trusted sites and other sites.  Better luck with your next presentation!

So Useful

thanks kaspersky team for these useful information

we always wait news from yours

thanks again

Ability to print or save as PDF

This is indeed very helpful but it would be very nice to have it PRINTED ot save this as PDF and forward it to friends and save it for future reference.

I have read some good articles on this site and the same functionality should be applied for other articles too.

We are looking forward to it.

Thanks Kaspersky :-)

Firefox Security

Tries reading Sophos 10 web security myths. http://www.sophos.com/security/topic/web-security-myths.html

Firefox isn't the safes right now.

Browser with unsupported ActiveX is safer than IE.

A Switch and Indicator Lamp

Now we have determined it takes nearly 20 clicks to lock IE down, couldn't this be scripted to shove those sliders up, with an indicator light showing they're all in HIGH state, and the same button to reset settings to default and the indicator light changes again.

A simple idea, save productivity by avoiding all those menus.

Problem is, there' s no script.

What about Crome

Am a novice on changing settings for security, getting better since joining the Threatpost forum, but not sure if I need to bother with this one if I only use Crome.

I like the "step by step", Thanks
